Are Gender Roles Still A Thing?
Yes… and maybe more-so than ever
Over the last decade, we seemed to be tracking toward a world of gender invisibility. Gone were the days of ‘boy-things’ and ‘girl-things’. Anyone could be a CEO, doctor, mechanic, homemaker, firefighter, etc.
I rather liked this. My daughter’s girlfriend is a professional roofer and an all-around handyperson. I would rely on her for my home and car repairs above almost any dude, specifically myself.
But I also sympathized with those who felt the movement got carried away — biologically male athletes competing in female categories; priority hiring for females as male unemployment and addictions crises were peaking. I can see that this led to some perverse outcomes and a lot, lot, lot of angst over the whole gender equality and gender-neutral movement.
At least for me, the question becomes, ‘What does gender equality really mean? ‘ I do think genders are equal, but this doesn’t mean that genders don’t exist, and it does not mean that there are no differences between males and females.
This is a generalization, but I believe that there are things men are better at than women. Similarly, there are things women are better at than men. Men tend to be stronger, so while some women may be strong enough to be construction workers, it may be the exception. My…
