Am I Becoming a Stupid Old Man?
Blockchain, cryptocurrency, virtual real estate — it’s all greek to me. I need to re-learn how to learn.
During the large anti-masking truckers protest in Canada last month, the truckers were getting millions of dollars in support through donated cryptocurrency. Even after their $8 million GoFundMe account was frozen, the cryptocurrency kept rolling in. I didn’t understand this. The protestors ostensibly bought food and fuel with these crypto funds. I don’t get it.
This morning, I read in the newspaper — paper copy — that virtual real estate is taking off. Investment in plots of virtual property in Decentraland has increased tenfold in value. The investment medium — non-fungible tokens. Well, I think that’s how you invent — I’m not really sure because I don’t really understand NFTs either.
I’m starting to feel like I’m losing touch with this generation of technology. I don’t know what Twitch is — I had to google it. I’ve never been on TikTok. Bitcoin and cryptocurrency confuse me. And I don’t even understand blockchain.
I’ve tried to read up on some of these technologies a few times. I bought a book on blockchain but didn’t make it all the way through it. I’ve read — or at least skimmed — countless articles on each of these phenomena, but I’m not able to wrap my head around them.
